The Alhaji Zakari Jidda Youth Mobilization and Awareness Foundation, in collaboration with the Gombe State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has organized a one-day sensitization campaign to educate youth about the dangers of drug abuse.

This is in observance of the International Day for War Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Held at the Education Resource Center Gombe, the campaign brought together religious leaders, opinion leaders, and representatives from relevant organizations to discuss the devastating impact of drug abuse and explore strategies for prevention.

Speaking during the sensitization campaign, Asha Zakayo, a psychiatrist from specialist hospital Gombe, reiterate the commonality of drugs abuse in the society

“Drug abuse is on the increase, with statistics showing 14.3 million people abusing substances.

“This awareness campaign is crucial for our society due to the significant negative effects of substance abuse,” he said.

Zakari Yau Sambo, from the NDLEA’s Drugs Demand Reduction Unit in Gombe, noted the importance of community engagement.

“This organization has effectively brought together youth, religious leaders (imams and pastors), and community members to address the issue of drug abuse,” he said.

“This collaborative approach is making a positive impact.”

Umar Hassan, a representative of the conveners, stressed the need for continued efforts, particularly in reaching remote areas. “Drug vendors are operating in remote villages, so intensified efforts are crucial to reach these areas and apprehend drug dealers,” he emphasized.

Drug abuse and illicit trafficking pose a significant global challenge.

By raising awareness and supporting those affected, this campaign represents a vital step towards addressing this critical issue within the Gombe community.
