The Daurama Foundation’s advocacy film, Voices Within, has won the Best Film on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence at the Africa Film For Impact Festival (AFFIF) 2025, held at the Silverbird Cinemas in Abuja.

Directed by Bem Pever, Voices Within explores the multifaceted realities of gender-based violence and the resilience of survivors who find strength to speak out, heal, and rebuild their lives.

The film also received nominations in two additional categories — Best Narrative Film and Best Film on Women Empowerment.

In her reaction, Dr. Samira Buhari, Founder of the Daurama Foundation, said the recognition reinforces the organisation’s commitment to using storytelling as a tool for social advocacy and reform.

“This recognition strengthens our resolve to continue using storytelling as a tool for advocacy and social change,” Buhari said. “Through Voices Within, we aim to amplify survivors’ voices and challenge the systemic barriers that sustain gender inequality.”

Receiving the award on behalf of the Foundation, Francisca Nzeagwu, Communications Coordinator, expressed gratitude to the festival organisers, cast, and crew.

“Our heartfelt thanks go to the AFFIF organisers for creating a platform where storytelling meets meaningful change,” she said. “We also extend deep appreciation to our cast and crew, whose creativity and commitment brought every moment of this story to life.”

The 2025 edition of AFFIF was held under the theme, “From Awareness to Action – Turning Empowerment into Real Change.” The festival convened filmmakers, advocates, and development partners working to use film and media to address pressing social issues across Africa.

During a panel session, director Bem Pever joined other thought leaders to discuss how film and digital media can challenge harmful norms, uplift survivors, and promote women’s empowerment.

The Daurama Foundation said Voices Within underscores its ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence through survivor support, skills development, psychosocial care, and advocacy for institutional accountability.

The Foundation also called on individuals, organisations, and policymakers to turn awareness into tangible action by supporting survivor-centred storytelling and grassroots initiatives against violence.
