Francis Fukuyama is coming

On that day at the Main Hall of the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, Fukuyama is scheduled to be one of two key speakers who will speak at a one-day seminar whose theme is Development from Global Perspectives: Agriculture versus Oil and Gas. The famous Japanese-American professor is billed to speak specifically on the topic Development from Global Perspectives. He is expected in his paper to focus on and provide insight on the key issues of governance, leadership and the prosperity of nations. Fukuyama is presently a senior fellow at Stanford University, a member of the USA’s Ivy League universities. His reputation as one of the foremost development thinkers of our era will certainly precede him to Nigeria.

The other key speaker at the event would be Professor Bob Osaze, former Dean, Faculty of Business Administration, University of Benin who is expected to talk on Agriculture versus Oil and Gas. Professor Osaze was formerly an Adviser to the Director-General, Securities and Exchange Commission and has also acted as Adviser to several national and international agencies, institutions and organisation. His specialty is strategy and implementation of agreed goals.

According to Dr. Hussaini Mohammed, MD/CEO of Muregi Associates, a consultancy outfit which specialises in financial and management advisory services, organisers of the one-day event, the cerebrated Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido and the Minister of Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, will be joint keynote speakers at the occasion.

Professor Ibrahim Gambari, Under Secretary- General of the UN would chair the event. All the star participants, Dr. Mohammed said, have confirmed in writing their readiness to take part in the seminar. Some organisations, such as the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) as well as individual state governors are said to have also indicated their firm interest to either partner with the organisers or to attend the conference.

Dr.Mohammed disclosed that audience for the event would be drawn from the ranks of policy makers and implementers, the academia, the corporate world, development  researchers, national and state planners, state governors, states and federal parliamentarians and just about anyone who loves knowledge or wishes to have his capacity built upwould be at the event. He said in order to cover the enormous cost of staging such a high calibre seminar, some modest fee would be charged from- those who will attend the event but that his outfit is primarily motivated by the need to bring a man like Fukuyama to contribute his ideas on how Nigeria and other developing nations can move forward.
