Engr. Bahijjahtu Abubakar, the National Coordinator, Special Presidential Intervention for the National Clean Cooking (SPINCC) Scheme said during the inauguration of the National-Level Implementation Committee that government efforts was to save the health of women and also stimulate the stove market.
According to the Coordinator, the National Clean Cooking Scheme (NCCS) was an aggressive drive aimed at encouraging and fostering clean cooking through the adoption of cleaner cook stoves and fuels. “The NCCS is in response to the dangers inherent in kerosene and fuel wood cooking and lighting. Owing to the energy poverty prevalent in the rural areas, most households depend on kerosene and firewood for cooking and lighting purposes. This practice degrades our environment and is very inimical to the health of women and children who are the most vulnerable to the effects of burning dirty fuels.”
“Our target is the rural energy-poor woman who is most vulnerable to the effects of using kerosene and firewood to meet her daily energy needs. The major aim of this social intervention is to impact on the health of the women who have to contend with respiratory infections and ailments due to indoor air pollution and smoke inhalation.”

Most women in the rural areas are forced to cook with firewood and/or kerosene which are very expensive, time consuming to procure and most of all inimical to health. The target for the National Clean Cooking Scheme (NCCS) of the Federal Ministry of Environment is to provide 20 million clean cook stoves by the year 2020,”She added.
