The French Embassy in Nigeria has called for greater awareness and understanding of the legal systems operating in different countries as part of efforts to promote mutual respect, collaboration, and cultural exchange.

The initiative, which aligns with France’s commitment to human rights and comparative law, highlights the importance of sharing knowledge on legal frameworks and practices as a means to strengthen global cooperation.

The embassy made this known during the Legal Day event held at the French Institute in Wuse, Abuja, where participants took part in a law-themed quiz covering topics from various countries, including France, Nigeria, Japan, Singapore, and South Africa. Three winners emerged from the contest.

The event, which attracted administrators, students, and legal enthusiasts, aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of French legal culture while encouraging appreciation for diverse legal traditions. The embassy said similar events will be organised in Lagos, Port Harcourt, and other locations with active French communities.

Speaking with newsmen, Ketty Régis, Cooperation Attaché at the French Embassy, explained that the initiative was introduced by France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice to enhance legal literacy and promote cross-cultural understanding.

Régis noted that knowledge of a country’s laws can foster better relationships among nations and individuals, adding that plans are underway to expand the programme to cities where Alliance Française operates.

“The upcoming Legal Day events will feature a variety of activities centred around the legal frameworks of different countries,” she said.

Hilary Onuora, a French teacher and moderator of the quiz session, said the event was designed to educate students about legal systems in countries they might visit.

He added that the institute remains committed to providing a holistic education that combines language learning with global awareness and ethical development.

“Knowledge of the French language opens global opportunities. It’s highly advisable to join the institute to broaden your understanding of both French and general knowledge,” he said.

One of the quiz winners, Odi Lagi, commended the embassy for promoting legal awareness and bridging knowledge gaps through such initiatives. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity and credited her success to her background as a human rights advocate in Nigeria.
