A huge explosion on Tuesday rocked the popular Monday Market in
Maiduguri, the second of such incident in less than a week.
There are fears that many people must have been killed or injured by
the explosion, whose deafening sound was heard across the metropolis
around 4.15pm.
It was not immediately clear whether the attack was a suicide mission.
“The explosion happened by the Shonekan Gate at the market despite the fact that a lot of security measures have been put in place,” said
Alhaji Usman, a resident of Maiduguri who was not far from the scene.
“Vehicles and tricycles are not allowed into the market. Therefore, the explosive must have been ferried to the place by
someone who disguised as a trader or buyer,” he said.
Thick smoke was seen billowing from the market while state
government ambulances were seen heading towards the direction.
Over 70 people were killed and 143 injured by four different suicide
missions, including two at the Monday Market, one at Baga Market and
another one at Borno Express Terminus all in Maiduguri last Saturday.
