The committee which will have offices in all the 17 local government areas of the state, is to encourage the public to take advantage and register in the INEC continuous voter registration exercise.
A statement issued by Alhaji Baba Malam Wali, permanent secretary, political affairs, in the office of the secretary to the state government, stated that Governor Ibrahim Gaidam has approved the constitution of the committees.
Membership of the committee include commissioners, special advisers, senior special assistants and assistants to the governor who have been directed to work closely with local government representatives and traditional rulers in their respective local government areas to mobilize the people for the exercise.
Kanem Trust reports that the Yobe government’s decision to constitute the committees followed a revelation by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Alhaji Muhammad Ahmadu, that “less than 700 new voters in the state had registered in the continuous voter registration exercise in the last two years.”
Ahmadu who made the revelation in Damaturu at a meeting organised by INEC for election stakeholders including journalists and civil society organisations, said the exercise had been going on since 2008 for those who did not attain the voting age as at the last election.
According to him, “it is disturbing that youths who are now eligible to vote did not register while the deadline is fast approaching and election is generally getting close,” the electoral commissioner said.
