A rescue operation by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps turned tragic on Thursday as a marshal and a driver lost their lives in a double crash along the Benin-Lagos Expressway in Edo State.
The incident occurred around the Oviobogie axis in Ovia North East Local Government Area of the state.
Sources said FRSC personnel had responded to an earlier road accident and were attending to victims when an oncoming vehicle rammed into the scene.
The driver reportedly died in the first accident in which the FRSC officials were carryingout the rescue operation.

A motorist who identified himself simply as Iyobor attributed the first accident to the indiscriminate parking of trucks along the expressway.
Confirming the incident, the Edo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Cyril Mathew, said the tragedy began with an initial crash that drew the attention of marshals and other emergency responders.
He said while rescue efforts were ongoing, another vehicle rammed into the accident scene and hit those assisting the victims.
“The impact of the second crash led to the death of an FRSC marshal involved in the rescue effort and a driver who was present at the scene,” he stated.
Mathew added that tensions escalated shortly after the second crash as some motorists allegedly accused FRSC personnel of causing the accident and attacked them, creating confusion at the scene.
