The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called on the motoring public in Kubwa, Abuja, to always ensure their tyres are in proper condition before embarking on any journey.
The Kubwa Unit Commander, Chima Okonkwo, who made the call during a sensitisation campaign in the area tagged “Know your tyres, your life depends on them,” said the step has become necessary in view of the spate of crashes recorded as a result of wornout tyres.
He said the campaign was targeted at educating the motoring public on the need to take care of their tyres by being mindful of the tyres they uses and to avoid fairly used tyres.
“Over 40 percent of accidents recorded in the recent past are attributed to tyre burst. That is why we are very passionate about tyre education to ensure that the motoring public gets used to their tyres,” he stated.
He enumerated some of the steps in taking care of tyres to include knowing the manufacture date, ensuring it does not extend the expiry date/life expectancy, occasional rotation of tyres, among others.
Acknowledging the high cost of brand new tyres in view of the economic situation in the country, Okonkwo insisted that no amount of money can be equated with the lives of both the driver and his passengers.
