The Zonal Commanding Officer, RS12HQ comprising of (Borno, Bauchi and Yobe) zone, Garba Terrang, said this during the 2009 ember month campaign tagged “zero tolerance to road traffic crashes in Nigeria” which was held at Baga Motor Park in Maiduguri.

According to the Commander, other programmes that would be carried out as a preventive measure to traffic included the introduction of road transport standardisation scheme (RTSSS) which was aimed at checkmating both the vehicle and the driver. Free safety check, aggressive campaign against night journey due to its attendant risk, mass deployment of patrol teams to serve as watchdog against traffic offenders and checking the excess of motorcyclists.

Terrang said that the ember month campaign was specifically organised to enlighten and sensitise proactive approach to all road users and the public on the need to conduct them these ember months. He noted that Nigeria was one of the developing countries with a high mortality rate due to traffic crashes.  “The world health organization rank road traffic crashes as the third leading sector of death and casualty and most disturbing is that 70 percent of the  crashes occur in developing countries”, he added.

Speaking earlier, Acting Sector Commander, Borno Command, Daniel Sayi, in his welcome address, noted that the annual campaign had  gone in a long way in enlightening motoring public on how best to use the road particularly during the ember months ,saying human and vehicular traffic movement were  on the increase which gave rise to road traffic crash.  He added that this year campaign would be carried out in all motor parks and other sector of motoring public, urging all stakeholders and participants to carry the message to nook and crannies of the state.
