The FRSC male team, Safety Shooters, defeated the Owena Kings of Ondo with 31-24 goals, to win the first place.

The Safety Babes of the FRSC female handball team also beat the Civil Defence Girls with total goals of 32-25 putting them in the first place for the female category.

Coach David Emmanuel of the FRSC said that the victory was a double honour for the commission stating that “winning on both sides shows our commitment to the game of handball’’.

“I want to declare the victory as a way of our obligation. We have been striving to project a good team and upgrade the handball game in Nigeria.’’

Emmanuel said the Owena Kings were good players who knew their tactics.

“They came out to use our tactics but at the end of the day we also used our experience on them and we were able to conquer them. ’’

According to him, the championship meant a lot to the club because they had not been to any tournament in a long time and winning the trophy was quite an achievement.

Mr Mark Jacob, the Chairman, Centre for Children and Youth Excellent in sports, an NGO said the event was organized to bring talents together and to develop grassroots sports.

He said the competition was also to give players the opportunity to showcase their talents and prepare them for greater events in the future.

Jacob said the turnout of teams was impressive and expressed optimism that next year’s tournament would be bigger and better.

Jacob however complained about the field.

“ I’m not happy about the field, it is too crude. I wish we had a field that was of an international standard , that way we would enjoy the game greatly’’.

He said the experience gathered at this year’s event would help the organisers prepare for a better tournament next year. (NAN)
