Fruits, vegetables to generate 43% industry revenue in 2014

Dr. Ibrahim disclosed this in Kaduna yesterday in a paper presentation at a 3-day national workshop and exhibition on Post-Harvest Management and Value Chain Financing organised by Kaduna Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (KADCCIMA) in collaboration with the RMRDC.
Represented by the Director, Special Duties/Head of Food and Beverages Division of (RMRDC), Usman Argungu Hassan, Dr. Ibrahim said Nigeria alone consumes about 50% of the total volume of fruit juice sold in Africa, following the ban placed on the importation of fruit juice brands into the country in 2002 by the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
He said: “Fruit and vegetables processing industry’s most important products are canned fruits and vegetables, sales of which are expected to generate about 43.0% of industry revenue in 2014. The canned fruits and vegetable products include pickled and brined fruits and vegetables, canned jams and jellies, canned tomato-based sauces, pickles, relishes and sauerkraut, among others.”
In his address, the President of KADCCIMA, Dr Abdul-Alimi Bello, said that since the Nigerian economy is developing and businesses are boosting, there is the need to depend less on import. He said development efforts in the past have sought to promote aggregate output not only to feed the growing population but also to provide raw materials for domestic agro-industries as well as exports.
