The Rivers Grassroots Movement (RGM) has commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his action in revoking the ₦124 billion Secretariat Renovation contract earlier awarded under a previous interim arrangement in the state.

In a statement signed by its National Leader, High Chief (Hon.) Amb. Sobomabo Jackrich (Egberipapa), the group described the governor’s move as a demonstration of fiscal discipline, accountability, and commitment to people-centered governance.

“We especially appreciate and applaud the Governor’s decisive action to revoke the ₦124 billion Secretariat Renovation contract awarded during the emergency administration — a contract that, in the judgment of Rivers people, did not reflect prudent fiscal management or the developmental priorities of the state,” the group said.

The RGM also lauded Governor Fubara for ordering the refund of ₦20 billion reportedly disbursed in advance payments, noting that the decision reflected “a responsible and transparent use of public funds.”

“By annulling this contract and demanding accountability, His Excellency has shown the kind of leadership that restores confidence in government,” Jackrich stated.

Beyond fiscal reforms, the grassroots body praised the governor for approving the payment of eight months’ salary arrears to newly recruited health workers under the Rivers State Hospitals Management Board. The payment covers about 1,000 health personnel across the state’s 23 local government areas.

“This gesture reaffirms the governor’s commitment to workers’ welfare and the strengthening of the health sector,” the statement added.

The group further urged the Rivers State House of Assembly to review the Rivers State Landlord and Tenants Law (1991) to address rising rent and exploitative agent charges in Port Harcourt.

“The economic realities demand urgent legislative intervention to protect tenants while ensuring fair returns for property owners,” RGM said.

Reaffirming its support for the Fubara administration, the group pledged continued partnership in promoting good governance, transparency, and accountability.

“Our endorsement is not merely personal; it is an endorsement of the future of Rivers State — a future grounded in prudent stewardship, social investment, and tangible development for the people,” the statement concluded.

The Rivers Grassroots Movement also called on all stakeholders — government, civil society, and traditional institutions — to unite in rebuilding trust and advancing inclusive development in the state.
