Vice Chancellor of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), Lapai, Prof. Abu Kasim Adamu, has flayed the sluggish pace of exploration in Nigeria’s frontier inland basins, calling it a setback to the nation’s efforts to secure additional oil reserves.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited had established a Professorial Chair in Basinal Studies at IBB University to spearhead research and exploration in the Bida Basin.
Speaking at the 2024 Earth Week event, themed ‘Refresh and Restore the Earth: Growing a Greener Tomorrow’, organised by the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) and the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE) in collaboration with IBB University Students chapter, Prof. Adamu urged the federal government and NNPC Limited to accelerate drilling activities in the Bida basin.
He emphasised that seismic data and other research have indicated promising potential for oil and gas in the basin, and called for more action from key stakeholders.
Represented by Prof. Hassan Ibrahim, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Adamu praised the Department of Geology for its significant contributions to placing the university on the global map.
Earlier, Prof. Nuhu George Obaje, Chair of the NNPC Professorial Chair and Head of the Department of Geology and Mining, highlighted the department’s crucial role in frontier inland basin exploration.
He noted the department’s contributions to the Kolmani River discoveries in the Gongola basin of the Upper Benue trough.
