In some cars is also effective when third gear is in use (or even with the second gear), and so adds to the drivers choice of gear selection.

Technically when the driver selects the overdrive, the clutch locks to the outer casing and stops the sun wheel turning.  The planet carrier is then driven around the sun wheel and in turn drives the annulus at a slightly higher speed than itself. The effect is that the output shaft turns faster than the input shaft.

Overdrives are usually controlled by switches on the steering or gear lever. To turn it off the driver may just have to lift his foot from the accelerator and depress it again. Most cut-out automatically below pre-determined road speed.
