Furniture makers at Gandun Albasa, near the Kano Trade Fair Complex, are counting their losses after a fire outbreak on Monday night destroyed four shops.
The area, known as a significant hub for furniture production in Kano, supports the livelihoods of hundreds of artisans and traders.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire was triggered by an electrical spark following the restoration of electricity around 10:00 pm.
Two shops, reportedly stocked with foam materials, were completely razed, while the other two-housing finished furniture items-suffered significant damage.

Shop owner Mu’azu Inuwa Indabawa estimated losses in the millions of naira. He credited the swift response of the Kano State Fire Service with preventing the fire from spreading to nearby structures.
“The building that housed Hausawa Best Furniture, Shamsu Sabiu Isa Furniture, Shuaibu Anamu Best Furniture, and Indabawa Furniture was completely gutted. One of the shops was filled with foams, and none of it could be salvaged,” Indabawa said.
Fortunately, a nearby storey building containing more furniture items, as well as several adjoining shops, escaped the blaze.
The Kano State Fire Service recently said six lives were saved from various fire incidents in January 2025, with properties worth N1.2 billion saved during the same period.
Kabiru Isa Jaafar, speaking on behalf of the service’s spokesperson, Saminu Yusuf, said they received 56 fire emergency calls, including 10 rescue missions and seven false alarms, during the review period.
