Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) has established an Institute of Environmental Health and Justice.
The institute will provide a broad-based research, professional training and competencies in Environmental Health and Justice that reflects the emphasis on national policies and needs.
The vice chancellor of the university, Professor C. C. Asiabaka, said the institute will address the gap in manpower development and tackle man-made environmental nuisances that pose threat to the people.
He said that the institute is the first of its kind in Nigeria and the ECOWAS sub-region for training of skilled practitioners in Environmental Public Health and Justice.
The pioneer director of the institute, Professor Sanitarian A. N. Amadi, said part of the objectives of the institute is to run certificate, diploma, first degree, Masters and Ph.D. programmes in environmental health.
Murtala Isa Yako, 500 level student of public health, said the establishment of the institute was a step in the right direction.
