This year’s celebration started with an awareness campaign across the university campus before lectures were delivered to students.
The history of the day was traced back to March 2007 when the ‘African Malaria Day’ was replaced with ‘Malaria Day at the 60th World Health Assembly.
The aim for setting aside the day was to educate the world to see malaria as a global scourge needing joint efforts to tackle.
Africa was identified with the highest number of morbidity and mortality rates in the world. Stakeholders were charged to join hands and reduce the incidences of malaria globally.
The theme of this year’s Malaria Day was: “Invest in the future, defeat malaria,” but the theme was localised to reads as follows: ‘Invest in the future, defeat malaria through environmental health approach.”
The environmental health students sought for adequate funding for environmental health services as solution to malaria disease.
