Nigeria’s 33-year-old visual artist, Toyin Ojih Odutola has been shortlisted for the 2019 Future Generation Art Prize. Odutola is one of the 21 artists shortlisted from over 5,800 entries across 158 countries, from five continents including artists and artist collectives.

A statement by the organisers of the biannual global contemporary art prize, said, “From the shortlisted artists, the jury determine the winners of the main prize and special prizes during the Future Generation Art Prize exhibition at the PinchukArtCentre, Kyiv. Prizes are awarded at a ceremony in March 2019.”

The main prize winner will receive $100,000 – $60,000 in cash and $40,000 for investment in their practice. A special prize of $20,000 will be awarded between up to five artists at the discretion of the jury for supporting projects that develop their artistic practice.

The selection committee was made up of an international jury which includes: Pablo León de la Barra, Curator at Large, Latin America, Solomon R Guggenheim Museum and Foundation (New York); Björn Geldhof, Artistic Director, PinchukArtCentre (Kyiv); Helen Molesworth, writer; Gabi Ngcobo, curator, 10th Berlin Biennale; Tim Marlow, Artistic Director, Royal Academy of Arts (London); Christine Macel, Chief Curator, Centre Pompidou (Paris) and curator, Venice Biennale 2017; and Hoor Al Qasimi, President, Sharjah Art Foundation and International Biennial Association.

The award which is in its 5th edition is open to all artists aged 35 or younger from anywhere in the world, working in any medium.

Past winners include Tumelo Mosaka, Chief Curator for the Investec Cape Town Art Fair and Natalia Valencia Arango, Associate Curator, Estancia Femsa Casa Barragán (Mexico City).
