The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has constructed and furnished a Girl Child Community Centre in Gafiya village of Kaita Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The project is a direct intervention of UBEC, facilitated by Senator Saddiq Yar’Adua, said the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, during the commissioning and official hand-over of the facility in Gafiya village.

Bobboyi lamented that Northern Nigeria holds the record of the highest number of out-of-school girls in the world, hence the need to have such centres to address part of the menace.

He said it was surprising given that in the past 400 years, women from the North played substantial role in the field of Islamic education and scholarship.

He said while it was okay to marry off young girls, as practiced in the region, it was also important to allow them to finish their secondary school education.

In his remarks, the Deputy Governor of Katsina State, Alhaji Mannir Yakubu identified poverty and unemployment as the major threats to society which he also linked to illiteracy.

Yakubu urged members of the community to make the best out of the project and commended UBEC and Senator Saddiq Yar’Adua for their foresight in initiating the project.

Arewa Trust Weekly reports that the centre has a reception, coordinator’s office, staff room, two classrooms, computer room with 10 sets of computers, multi-purpose workshop, five toilets, solar powered panels and inverter.

In a related development, Senator Saddiq Yar’Adua has built an orphanage in Kaita town of Kaita Local Government Area of Katsina State in memory of his grandmother, Hajiya Mariya.

The orphanage, which was handed over to the Jama’atu Izalatul Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS) has the capacity of accommodating 300 orphans and has a school and dormitory.
