In a statement signed by Abdullahi Bego, the director of press affairs to the governor , Gaidam said N569 million released to the councils was  part of the government’s ongoing effort at providing the atmosphere needed by the councils to provide basic services and social amenities, including water, electricity, health facilities, classrooms, instructional materials and furniture among others to their communities.

The statement explained that the local councils with input from various communities submitted proposals to the governor for his approval to execute the various projects under the Local Government Action Plan.

“These services cut across various sectors, from education, water supply, healthcare delivery, rural electric power provision, road and culvert and drainage construction to various building and community empowerment projects. Together, the projects are helping to transform Yobe’s rural landscape, enhancing access and providing opportunity to people and strengthening their productive capacities toward improved living standards”, Bego said.

The statement added that although the total monthly salary bill and other standing payments for the 17 local governments in Yobe State stood at over N1.15 billion, Governor Gaidam, in collaboration with the local councils, was poised to ensure that basic social services were regularly delivered to people at the grassroots level.

Bego also added that Governor Gaidam had directed the councils to ensure that all contract projects to be executed under the Local Government Action Plan be awarded to local contractors indigenous to each of the 17 local government areas.

“This is to encourage the local contractors and accelerate jobs provision, especially to youth across the state”, the statement said.

Kanem Trust reports that following the conduct of local government elections in the state recently, Governor Gaidam had promised to allow all councils have access to their federal statutory allocations “but with strict compliance” in order to allow them deliver their electioneering promises and improve the lives of the electorates.
