President Muhammadu Buhari and other African leaders will meet in Ghana on Saturday to take a decision on The Gambia’s political logjam.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, disclosed this to State House correspondents on Friday.

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh had refused to accept defeat in last month’s election after he had initially accepted his loss in the December 1 election, but later changed his position, vowing to remain power.

Shehu told journalists that the African leaders would meet in Accra, the capital of Ghana, after the inauguration of the country’s president-elect, Nana Akufo-Addo.

The presidential spokesman said that the meeting was critical to the resolution of the crisis rocking The Gambia.

"President Buhari and other African leaders will on Saturday be attending the inauguration of Nana Akufo-Addo as the President of Ghana.

"Another important thing is that shortly after the inauguration, the leaders will be meeting on the crisis in The Gambia.

"A major decision on the impasse is expected to be taken at that all-important meeting.

"President Buhari is the Chief Mediator is the crisis and he is committed to ensuring that the logjam is resolved," Shehu said.

Earlier on Friday, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, had said Buhari would Saturday attend the inauguration ceremony of Ghana’s president-elect, Nana Akufo-Addo in Accra.
