Most got departures come after a gruesome death or a simple “I’m off” but season 5 will be without some of the characters we’ve followed from the very first season without much of an explanation at all, other than the actors playing them are having the year off!
Kristian Nairn, who plays Hodor in the hit HBO series, recently spoke to Australia’s 7.30 and revealed that he and co-star Isaac Hempstead-Wright, who plays Bran Stark, are having a year off from the show.
When host Monique Schafter said that fans around the world had to be patient ahead of the release of season 5 of the show, Kristian told her: “We’re not actually in Season 5, by the way. We have a season off. We have a year’s hiatus.”
And when asked why, the actor said: “Solely because, I imagine, our storyline is up to the end of the books. So I get a year off now to do Rave of Thrones and gallivant all over the world.”
While nothing has been confirmed by Hampstead-Wright, HBO, or producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, news of Hodor’s departure could mean that, since neither Bran, Hodor or Meera were killed off after entering the lair of the Three-Eyed Raven, the entire storyline is simply on hold until season 6.
The decision could be a wise one given the many storylines occurring at the same time during the show. While its unlikely this move will be used on marquee characters like Tyrion and Daenerys, could this tactic be a successful way of handling its myriad of plotlines?
