Prominent political and traditional figures—including Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Ibrahim Shekarau, Barau I. Jibrin and Muhammadu Sanusi II—were in attendance as Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, swore in Murtala Sule Garo as the new deputy governor.
Garo’s inauguration followed his confirmation by the Kano State House of Assembly, which screened and cleared him for the position last week.
Daily Trust reports that the appointment comes after the resignation of former deputy governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who stepped down on March 27, 2026.
The ceremony, attended by stakeholders across political divides, reflects evolving political dynamics in Kano ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Governor Yusuf, elected on the platform of the NNPP alongside Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had earlier defected to the APC. His former deputy, Gwarzo, declined to join him and instead aligned with Kwankwaso in the ADC.
The development has triggered significant realignments in the state, with several key figures shifting allegiances. Notably, some politicians previously linked to Ganduje are said to have moved closer to Kwankwaso’s camp, including the APC’s 2023 governorship candidate, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna.
A former commissioner and seasoned political actor, Garo had long been tipped as a strong contender for the role, emerging from a shortlist of three.
Speaking after taking the oath of office, Garo expressed gratitude to the governor and pledged loyalty to the administration.
“I stand here with gratitude and a deep sense of responsibility on this important day in my life and in the journey of this administration,” he said.
“I accept this responsibility as a call to serve and to support your leadership in advancing the development of Kano State.”
He also thanked the state assembly for confirming his nomination and pledged to align with the administration’s policies and programmes.
“To the people of Kano State, I remain committed to your service. This moment calls for teamwork and continuity. My role is to support the vision of this administration and ensure that government policies deliver real results,” he added.
In his remarks, Governor Yusuf described Garo’s appointment as strategic, aimed at strengthening unity, consolidating achievements, and ensuring stability.
“This moment represents a renewed commitment to the ideals that bind us together as a party and as a people,” he said.
According to the governor, the nomination followed wide consultations and was guided by inclusiveness and effective leadership. He added that Garo’s experience makes him well-suited for the role.
“At this critical moment, Kano State requires tested leadership, unity of purpose, and political stability, all of which he represents,” Yusuf stated.
He urged the new deputy governor to demonstrate complete loyalty and work in harmony with the administration.
“There is no issue of 99 per cent loyalty. You must be loyal 100 per cent and work in full cooperation to advance our shared vision,” he said.
Yusuf also noted that recent political developments, including the state’s alignment with the federal government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, would enhance development and strengthen collaboration on key national programmes.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to good governance, transparency, and improved welfare for citizens, while calling for continued support from stakeholders and residents.
