Speaking to our correspondent in Kano, the chairman said since the advent of the holy month of Ramadan, the local government came out with some initiatives that would cushion the effect of the fast and also bring happiness to the people. “This is different from the usual Ramadan feeding programme we do every year,” he explained.

Dr Gawuna revealed that 1100 bags of rice cost them N4.6 million to obtain. “Helping the less privileged is our mission, so I believe it is a step in a right direction to help them, especially during this holy period,” he said.

He said each of the 11 wards of the local government would receive equal amounts of the rice, adding that he ensured that some unscrupulous individuals did not corner the food items for their personal gains.

“The selection of the beneficiaries was not done on a political party affiliation basis. Rather anybody defined or described as destitute, less privileged, indigent, among others, are to benefit from this gesture,” said the chairman.

Gawuna said the beneficiaries were selected by the councilors and the committee on Zakkah, who went round the 11 wards of the council to fish out those who were eligible for the gesture.

While calling on people to make meticulous use of the items and not sale them, the council boss stated that the council would continue to bring succour to the people of the area irrespective of their political leaning when the need arises.
