Mr Abdulkadir Gaya has emerged as the new President of the National Association of Sorghum Producers, Processors, and Marketers of Nigeria (NASPPAM).

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony on Thursday in Abuja, Gaya urged the Federal Government to form synergy with NASPPAM to boost sorghum production

This, he said will address poverty in the country.

He, however, stressed the need to develop agriculture from the grassroots to increase production.

“I therefore urge the government to form synergy with this commodity association because we have a robust relationship with farmers at grassroots.

“Partnering with this association will make the government gets to the real farmers. This would also boost food security and reduce poverty in the country,” he said.

The Chairman, Board of Trustees, NASPPAM, Alhaji Sadiq Daware, emphasised the importance of harnessing the potentials of sorghum to address poverty and food insecurity in the country.

According to Daware, sorghum is a vital crop that can provide food, income, and employment opportunities for millions of Nigerians.

“The best way to go is to make sure that the government during its design of projects and programmes should include the commodity association, who are the bedrock of development.

“They are the producers at the grassroots level. They ought to have been at the design of projects and programmes of the government.

“Secondly, they should also be part and parcel of all intervention programmes. Throughout the world, the only way that projects succeed, particularly in the agriculture sector, is to make sure that the grassroots farmers are also part of the projects.

“So we are calling on the government, the development partners, to please work together with this Association because the commodity is very important, it is food, it is medicinal and it is also livestock feed.”
