New Chief Justice of Nigeria Walter Nkanu Onnoghen began his tenure at the apex of the Nigerian judiciary when he was sworn-in on Tuesday by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo. The Acting President charged Onnoghen to restore confidence in the nation’s judiciary. Even before the new CJN began to do so, Osinbajo bestowed on him Nigeria’s second highest national honour, Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, GCON. What then will this eminent jurist strive for, since he got the honour even before he did the job?
Between Emir and Waziri
We used to think that when any social conflict becomes intractable, an Emir and his leading councillors are the ones with wisdom to solve it. Imagine our dismay when the Emir of Bauchi Alhaji Rilwan Suleiman Adamu and his most senior councillor, Wazirin Bauchi Alhaji Muhammadu Bello Kirfi, engaged in a hot exchange inside a Friday mosque that later earned the Waziri “permanent suspension.” The dispute was over whether anyone other than Waziri could sit next to the emir. Haba Royal Father, what is “permanent suspension”? There was nothing like that in the General Order.
Dollar heads for 1000 Naira?
The Federal Government’s three year [2017-20] Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, ERPG, which was published by the National Planning and Budget Ministry on Tuesday, states that the Naira will soon be allowed to float [like a butterfly] and that “market forces” will be allowed to determine its exchange rate against major currencies. Why then did Central Bank of Nigeria [CBN] spend over a billion dollars this month trying to make the Naira “appreciate” against the US dollar? Once it begins to “float,” the Naira could slump to 1,000 to the dollar in order to satisfy greedy foreign investors, who want to scoop up all our assets with only a few greenbacks.
Secretariat does not a party make
Since last month when the Court of Appeal affirmed him as PDP’s authentic National Chairman, Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff has devoted all his energies to regaining physical control of Wadata Plaza, the party’s national secretariat. The party’s workers however refuse to report for duty, and Sheriff is threatening to sack all of them. But secretariat and office workers alone do not a party make. Most PDP members across the country do not recognise Sheriff as their leader. The Appeal Court might have to make a consequential order that every PDP member must report at Wadata Plaza.
N30m ransom for a teacher?
God have mercy! This country’s kidnappers have gone mad again, to borrow the title of an old play. Edo State Police Commissioner Haliru Gwandu said three teachers of Ebomisi Secondary School in Ovia Local Government were kidnapped while on their way home from school. The kidnappers demanded a ransom payment of N30million. What? Thirty million naira ransom for a teacher, who probably has not seen his salary for several months? If he has N30million, will he be going to teach everyday even when his salary at the end of the month is uncertain?
