Professor Olabisi Aina of the Obafemi Awolowo University said yesterday that involvement of women in leadership positions would fast-track the delivery of dividends of democracy.

She said, “If we want a policy or governance that can serve all and sundry, then men and women must be actively involved in decision making.”

She spoke at a dialogue on gender policy and women empowerment organized by Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre, (WARDC) held in Lagos.

She stated that mainstreaming a gender perspective is a process of accessing the implications for men and women of any planned action including legislation, policies in all areas at all levels.

She stressed that the involvement of women in leadership can give a country the best in governance.

Executive Director of WARDC, Dr. Abiola Afolabi, explained that the objective of the Policy Dialogue is to support the government and the people of Lagos State in shaping policies that will further promote Gender Equality and Women Development in the state Post 50 year’s celebration.

She enthused that Nigeria needs to reassess the level and effectiveness of her gender equality commitments in different sectors such as education, health, governance and employment in order to improve the lives of women and girls.

The Lagos @ 50 Gender Dialogue was also aimed at aggregating the concessions among stakeholders to mainstream gender equality, support a dialogue that will build enabling environment for gender policy in Lagos State and build capacity in gender mainstreaming knowledge and skill.
