The rate at which knowledge is spreading is giving me serious cause for concern. Gone were the days when people could get away with blue murder, go home, have a nice shower and romp with their favourite sidekick. This invention of a university dropout and the accessory of Chinese handheld devices have opened the doors to all secrets. Gone were the days when anyone wishing to expose other people’s secrets had to first verify the closest NADECO route or be prepared to die in a hotel toilet. A recruit cannot even beat up a bloody civilian for the heck of it without it trending on social media. Come on guys – what is this world turning into?
Executhief governors cannot lodge state money into private accounts without somebody publishing the details. Insolence everywhere! People are so bold these days they want to know if Sai Baba has started paying back the N29 million presidential form loan? They want to know where the payments are coming from – foreign trip allowances; the ranch in Daura or whether it’s been written off as bad debt by the bank. Some even insinuate that having won the elections and become party leader; the money was returned with interest. If they had harboured such evil thoughts in 1985 and a fly whispered it as it flew past, they would have been guilty under Decree number 2 or 4.
In a demoncrazy people with the audacity to loot should be allowed to do so without having to check their timelines. Today, each time you open Facebook, Zuckerberg asks – what’s on your mind? That is an open invitation to incitement. It is dangerous for governance since the surest way to unquestionable wealth and perpetual relevance is taking advantage of the system.
I have travelled this memory lane because of the audacity of an online publication of an anonymous petition against General Brutal, aka Shia terminator. It accused him of buying second-hand motorcycles for troops fighting Boko Haram without pictorial evidence that these Okadas break down on the battlefront. Most worrisome is the revelation that General Brutal bought houses in Dubai worth N115 million and fully paid for it. They made it sound as if that is a negation of the Army Act. Here is a country where an ordinary ex-petroleum minister proudly admits to owning an $18 million house in Abuja. Where were these petitioners when a serving permsec funded his child’s wedding in Dubai?
Of course in their rush to spread mischief and cause disaffection and disharmony among our fighting troops, they did not disclose that this officer and gentleman has been saving for his dream house since he was commissioned second lieutenant in 1985. His salary then at a fantastically higher exchange rate is worth more in value than the $5 million that Aliko Dangote lost in one day two weeks ago when government messed up the exchange rates. They fail to factor in this officer’s multi-million dollar athleticism or the money he makes from his snake farm. In modesty, whereas his religion permits him to have four wives, he restrained himself to being husband of only two. Barring accidental discharge, as a loyal citizen it is expected he subscribes to the policy of one-woman four children.
 His traducers forget that either or both of his two wives could have made money from oil blocks in which case a N115.6 million Dubai house is a boys quarter? If they operate a bureau-de-change for instance, they could make more money in one day of bad Naira than their husband makes in two years. Those who calculate that even if the general has been saving his gross and net untouched all through the years, he could not have bought the houses in question think that every farm remains unchanged like Sai Baba’s ranch.
These anonymous petitioners have maligned, impugned and assaulted the integrity of a gallant officer commanding troops of a government that develops life-threatening hives each time corruption is mentioned. They forced the army as an institution to take on the brief of its chief because, until he was appointed, there were no soldiers, only third-rate boy scouts fighting boko haram. Hailers jumped on the critical bandwagon, because General Brutal has resolved to do in Naija-Delta what he did in Zaria in order to free our oil and gas pipelines from creek vandals. Our government cannot fight corruption based on the jealous speculations of a few except of course such speculations affect President Jones or his men constantly working to undermine this regime. General Brutal has nothing to fear as long as he remains loyal. In fact, the way he is going, he may become the first Naija field marshal if he fulfils the promise of ending Boko Haram and carpeting ND vandals as he promised. When I looked at the crystal ball I don’t see him in the dock like Bukola Saraki , I see several years of unblemished career ahead of him, and ruptured bile for his enemies.
