Georgian Cup: Babangida hails First Bank’s unwavering support for Polo

Promoter and Captain of Kaduna El-Amin, Mohammed Ibrahim Babangida has given a big thumb up to First Bank Nigeria Limited, the sponsor of the annual Georgian Cup, one of the most regular polo competitions played at Kaduna Polo Club.

Speaking shortly after losing the finals to rival, Abuja Rubicon last weekend, Babangida said the sponsors deserve commendation, noting that even though his team lost, he has no regret losing to Abuja Rubicon.

He said he accept the outcome in the spirit of good sportsmanship, saying, losing is part of the game. “In sports, you win some and you lose some”, he said.

Though El-Amin’s loss was a surprise to many who saw the same team overpowered Abuja Rubicon in the semi-final, but Babangida said it was normal.

Since El-Amin started participating in the competition, it has won Georgian Cup 15-times while Abuja Rubicon has three trophies to show for their effort.

Abuja Rubicon first victory came in 2018, successfully defended the title in 2019 but lost to El-Amin last year, before returning to winning ways in 2021 in a fiercely contested 7-Chukkers encounter.

The game which kept fans on the edge of their seat is one of most hotly contested polo competition in recent times.

On hand to watch the competition were; Shehu Aliyu, representatives of the Chief Executive Officer of Firstbank, Bashir Ali, Group Head, North Central 1 of FirstBank of Nigeria, Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, the Emir of Katsina, Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, Minister for Aviation and Promoter of Abuja Rubicon, Hadi Sirika among others.
