German carrier Lufthansa is cancelling additional 2,000 flights from Frankfurt and Munich this summer, the German flagship carrier said on Wednesday, citing staff shortages at airports, industrial action and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the company, this will be between now and the end of August. This would be the third time the carrier has announced flight cancellations this summer.

The company added that Lufthansa initially cancelled more than 3,000 flights for the months of July and August and then cancelled another 770 connections for the week up to and including July 14.

It said ground services at the Frankfurt and Munich hubs in the afternoons and evenings were overloaded, noting that aircraft have to wait, and luggage left behind.

He said many staff were laid off during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to staff shortage.

He, however, added that flights to holiday destinations would only be cancelled in exceptional cases.

“Lufthansa has implemented numerous measures and is recruiting additional staff wherever possible to ensure the greatest possible stability of the flight schedule and thus offer its passengers the best possible planning security,” the carrier told Reuters.
