In the 19th minute of the first half, Muller scored an opener for Germany by pouncing on Muslera’s spilled save from Schweinsteiger’s long range effort. The forward anticipated the move and ran through to take full advantage of the ball.

A deserved equalizer came for Uruguay in the 28th minute, when Schweinsteiger was bullied off the ball by Perez who fed Suarez with the ball. Suarez turned it for Cavani and the Palermo man made no mistake as he buried the ball in the far corner of the net. All efforts to increase the tally in the last part of the first half could not materialise, as both teams’ players were wasteful in front of goals.

Uruguay took the lead in the 51th minute when Luis Suarez’s cross to the edge of the box was acrobatically volleyed into the ground and into the Germany’s net by Diego Forlan.

Two minutes later, Marcell Jansen’s header levelled score for the Germans Machines following Uruguay’s goalkeeper Muslera’s failure to punch away Jeroma Boateng’s cross.

The winner was scored in the 82th minute, when a corner from the Germany right was headed into the six-yard box and after Diego Lugano could not adjust his feet quickly enough to clear the ball, paving the way for the ball to pop up to Sami Khedira, who looped a header into the corner of the net.

The latter stages of the game were typically fraught. Uruguay pushed men forward in increasing numbers, allowing Germany to counter with purpose. Boateng had a firm shot saved well by Muslera, before a fluid counter ended with Kiessling scooping the ball over from close range.

Uruguay almost got an equaliser in the 92th minute, when Diego Forlan’s free-kick hit the cross bar.
