The Consul General of the Embassy of Germany in Nigeria, Herr Inglo Herbert, has said his government will spend $30 million on solar electricity projects at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH).

The consul general, in Calabar, said, “The 10mw project, when completed, will ensure 24 hours power supply throughout the university campus, as well as the adjoining University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.”

Both the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Zana Akpagu, and the Chief Medical Director of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Prof. Thomas Agan, said the project would solve the perennial problem of power outage in the two institutions. 

“Before now, we used to spend over N50m every month to generate power for the university, and this consumes more than our internally generated revenue,” Akpagu said.
