Speaking with Daily Trust in his office, the state director, federal ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Abdu Aminu Omar, said each farmer is to receive a bag of NPK and Urea brand of fertilizer and is expected to pay N2750 only as fifty percent cost of the commodity.
He said the federal and state governments would pay the balance of fifty percent, adding that this measure is aimed at providing fertilizers at the door steps of farmers to enhance agricultural productivity and guarantee food security in the state and the country at large.
According to him, several measures are being adopted to ensure that farmer’s produce are safeguarded, especially in terms of pest control and market stability, saying that government is resolute to ensure that farmers don’t produce at a loss.
“Adequate storage facilities are also being provided to make sure that food items are stored according to regulation and conserved in line with best practices so that farmer’s produce can stay for long periods without getting spoilt,” he said.
With regards to dry season farming, Omar noted that each year a streamline of activities are carried out to ensure that dry season farmers gets as much as their rainy season counterparts, adding that these measures include Quelea birds spray to eliminate those destructive birds that can consume ten hectares in a few minutes.
He said improved seeds of maize, rice and sorghum are also provided at a subsidized rate in addition to free teaching of farming techniques and availability of services given to farmers on modern farming techniques and styles.
