A 13- year-old girl, Ummu Salma, a junior secondary student in Anyigba, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State has been allegedly beaten to death by her classmates in the school compound.

City & Crime gathered that the incident happened on Tuesday when her colleagues descended on her and beat her till she died over a yet-to-be established issue.

The school, located behind a hospital in the town, is said to have been thrown into confusion, with many calling for vengeance or legal action over the incident.

According to the deceased’s step mother, Akagwu Gbelema Halimat Umar, the girl was killed by her fellow students under questionable circumstances in the school compound.

She said, “I just lost my stepdaughter. She was beaten to death by her school mates. Her schoolmates bullied her to death. They all ran away.”

Also, a neighbour, Adama Gowon, said it’s very unfortunate such an incident could happen in the school compound in the presence of other senior students and the school management without an intervention to save the girl’s life.

“This is a preventable death by all standards. How can the young girl come under attack in the school compound and no rescue comes by either from senior students or the school’s management, until she was bullied to death?

He said, “I know this girl very well, she is from the Attai More family. She is always in my house to interact with her friends anytime she is free. The circumstances of her death did not add up at all; she was killed in the hands of those that were supposed to shield her from harm.”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Williams Aya, said he was waiting for a briefing over the incident.

“I have contacted the DPO of the area over the alleged incident; he is yet to get back to me,” he said.
