A 14-year-old girl (name withheld) has been sentenced to one year in the juvenile prison for stealing N3.5 million from her godfather in Kano.

Also charged with the teenager was her headmistress and proprietor of a Kano-based private school Shola Ogedegbe.

The chief magistrate, Mukhtar Dandago, however gave the girl an option of N50,000 as fine.

The 14-year-old girl was arraigned for four-count charge of criminal trespass, house breaking and theft, while the headmistress was accused for receiving stolen property.

The court heard that the minor was lured into stealing with fake promises to take her abroad for studies by the headmistress.

The headmistress however is still standing trial for the one-count charge of receiving stolen property.

According to the FIR submitted to the court, Mr Olayinka Dagunduro of Zungeru road, Sabon Gari, Kano who is the complainant, reported at Kwakwachi police station Kano, that sometime between October and November 2018, his goddaughter trespassed into his house and broke into his room and stole N3.5 million from him.

He said during investigation it was discovered that the proprietor of her school, Shola Ogedegbe, was involved.

The convicted teenager told the court that the headmistress told her to steal the money form her godfather to start a cement company and assured her that after her secondary school she was going to pay for her university outside the country with the profit.

The chief magistrate, Muktar Dandago, adjourned the case of the headmistress to February 5 for continuation of trial.
