Maryam’s body was found the next day near old Watari dam, some kilometers away from where the erosion occurred.
It took nearly 10 hours to recover the body, an eyewitness who gave his name as Umar said.
The incident, according to Umar occurred after 10:00pm. The girl was on a bus. She tried to escape like other passengers but she got trapped inside the water.
He said, “Four passengers were on the bus when the bus got trapped in the erosion.”
Another eyewitness said Maryam boarded a bus together with the other passengers from Kiyawa market.
Residents who call it Yalawai Bridge said it was constructed 25 years ago, reconstructed last year and it collapsed penultimate Sunday.
Yalawai in Bagwai local government area links neighboring villages.
“Yalawai bridge is very important to the people in Bagwai for economic activities. It also helps people from Kano, Kaduna, Katsina and Zamfara states.
“The bridge links us with places like Dakwakin Tofa, Tofa, Bichi, Shanono, and Gwarzo local government areas,” a resident said.
The bridge, which lasted for only one year after its last reconstruction, collapsed as a result of a heavy rainfall that lasted for hours and caused flood, according to a resident.
Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Kano State Muazu Ahmad Allassan confirmed the incident.
