Globacom Chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr., Globacom congratulated the government and people of Ghana for the victory of Ghana’s junior national team, the Black Satellites in the FIFA U-20 World Cup final in Cairo, Egypt on Friday, describing the triumph of the Ghanaian youths as a collective victory for African football.

The Black Satellites at the Cairo International Stadium defeated Brazil 4-3 in a penalty shoot-out to claim the first of the three FIFA tournaments that Africa will be hosting up till next summer. Nigeria will host the FIFA U-17 Championship later this month with Globacom being the Official National Supporter while South Africa hosts the senior World Cup in June 2010.

By the victory, Ghana became the first African country to win the championship and Globacom Limited, the parent company of Glo Mobile Ghana, said the Black Satellites’ trail blazing performance is consistent with Globacom’s trail blazing accomplishments in Africa ’s telecommunications industry.

“Being the first set of players and coaches to bring such honour at this level to Ghana and Africa, the Black Satellites have surely planted their feet on the sands of time in the same way Globacom has left foot-prints on the sands of the African telecommunication industry”, he said.

Globacom said the victory of the Black Satellites and the qualification of the senior national team, the Black Stars for the 2010 World Cup is an eloquent testimony that the partnership between Globacom and the GFA will bring greater success in the years ahead. He also expressed the fervent hope that the Nigerian senior national football team, the Super Eagles will against all odds qualify for the 2010 World Cup.
