A gender analyst and development consultant, Ms. Mojisola Akinsanya, has said there is need to have more women in the political space to promote gender equality.

“We will continue to push to have more women participation in the political space. WARDC is doing a lot on this and a lot of NGOs are doing the same,” she added.

She spoke in Lagos at a 2-day capacity building workshop on coordination mechanisms to end violence against women and generate shadow report on violence against women organized by Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) with the support from Spotlight Initiative.

She also lamented that women and girls are more vulnerable to poverty but added the situation can be changed by giving them proper education.

Akinsanya, who was one of the facilitators at the event, however, stressed the need for provision of more opportunities for women to improve their economic wellbeing.

The activist said other barriers hampering more women participation in politics included godfatherism and money.

“If godfatherism and money are removed from politics, women will have opportunity to participate in the political space,” she stated.
