Senator Danjuma Mohammed Goje has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the construction of the Gombe–Biu–Maiduguri highway, saying the project marks a major step toward improving infrastructure, trade and development in the North East geopolitical zone. 

Goje, a former governor of Gombe State, told journalists in Abuja that he had repeatedly advocated for a major highway linking the northeastern states, stressing that the new project reflects the President’s readiness to respond to the people’s demands.

“I have been an advocate of the construction of a highway in the Northeast for many years. On several occasions, I spoke on the floor of the Senate on the need for Mr President to turn his attention to this part of the country.

“When I heard that the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, was in Gombe to flag off the construction of the road from Gombe to Biu, I felt it was necessary to commend the federal government,” he said.

Goje said the flag-off of the Gombe–Biu section and the mobilisation of contractors on the Akwanga–Jos-Bauchi-Gombe stretch showed that the projects had moved beyond promises.

“A leader is supposed to listen to the yearnings and aspirations of the people he leads. What has happened shows that the President is a listening leader.”

“I am happy that the President decided to do these roads. We asked for this intervention, and Mr President responded positively, not only on paper but physically,” he said.

The senator said the road, when completed and extended to Maiduguri as well as Yola and Jalingo would connect the six states of the Northeast and open up new economic opportunities for the region.

To this effect, Goje, therefore,  urged residents of the Northeast and other beneficiary states to reciprocate the federal government’s gesture by supporting the APC in future elections, particularly the 2027 polls.

“If somebody does good to you, do good to him. The President has done good to us as far as this highway construction is concerned, so we should be very appreciative of him and his party,” he said.
