Rory McIlroy has condemned the “unacceptable and abusive behaviour” at the Ryder Cup after his wife, Erica, was struck by a drink thrown by an American fan in New York.
The incident occurred on the 17th tee at Bethpage during McIlroy’s Saturday match with Shane Lowry.
Despite normally enjoying strong support in the U.S., the world No. 2 endured hostile treatment as Europe surged ahead. McIlroy admitted the abuse pushed him to snap at a heckler mid-swing.
Still, he called Europe’s triumph the perfect end to “the best year of my career,” having completed the Grand Slam and won the Irish Open.
