Gombe State governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has inaugurated a 15-member high-powered negotiation team to address the ongoing strike action by staff unions at the Gombe State University (GSU).

Daily Trust reports that the strike by unions in the university, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), has disrupted academic activities for weeks in the institution.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony at the Government House on Monday, Governor Yahaya expressed deep concern over the impact of the strike on students and the state’s education sector.

He emphasised the need for a swift resolution, stating that education is a priority for his administration.

According to him, the issue of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) was an inherited challenge from the past administration.

He appealed to the unions to recognise the economic challenges at hand, assuring them of the government’s commitment to improving the conditions of both the university and its staff.

Chairman of the Negotiating Team and Deputy Governor, Dr Manassah Daniel Jatau, assured all stakeholders of commitment to finding a lasting solution to the industrial action.
