Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, yesterday signed the bill creating 13 new Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) from the existing 11 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
The governor had two weeks ago submitted a bill to the State House of Assembly, seeking for the creation of the 13 LCDAs.
Speaking shortly after signing the bill during a brief ceremony at the Government House, Governor Yahaya said the creation of the LCDAs will revolutionise governance in the state by making it more accessible and responsive to the needs of the people.
He added that the creation of new LCDAs will usher in a period of development for the affected communities and the state at large.
The governor, therefore, urged the new LCDAs to concentrate their efforts and resources on four critical sectors; security, basic education, primary healthcare, and agriculture, which according to him formed the foundation of meaningful development at the grassroots level.
He revealed that to ensure a smooth transition, an Interim Management Committees (IMCs) will be put in place to maintain continuity of service delivery and prepare the LCDAs for full take-off. “We will also make provision for a phased implementation process in order to ensure that these LCDAs are effective from their inception.”
Governor Yahaya also announced the constitution of 10-member high-powered Transition Technical Committee to be chaired by the Deputy Governor, Dr Manassah Daniel Jatau with the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice; Commissioner of Local Government and Community Development; Commissioner of Finance and Economic Development; Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission as members.
Others are; Chairman, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Gombe State Chapter; Deputy Chairperson, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Gombe State Chapter; Director-General of the Joint Projects Development Agency; Auditor-General for Local Governments; State Chairman of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development to serve as the Secretary.
According to him, the general mandate of the committee is to ensure seamless transition of the LCDAs from their parent Local Government Councils, while maintaining the continuity of essential services delivery to the people.
Daily Trust reports that the new 13 proposed LCDAs and their designated headquarters are: Akko North (Headquarters: Amada), Akko West (Headquarters: Pindiga), Balanga South (Bambam), Billiri West (Tal), Dukku North (Malala), Funakaye South (Tongo) and Gombe South (Bolari).
Others are Kaltungo East (Wange), Kwami West (Bojude), Nafada South (Birin Fulani), Pero-Chonge (Filiya), Yamaltu East (Hinna) and Yamaltu West (Zambuk).
