A statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the University Muhammad Abubakar Sammani said the appointment was conveyed to the university in a letter signed by the secretary to the state government Alhaji Sule Bage.
The statement said until his appointment, professor Umar was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University and Dean, Faculty of Science and Post-Graduate School.
Before he joined the university in 2009, Umar was the Director at the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT) ABU Zaria and Director, Nuclear Science and Technology, Energy Commission of Nigeria, Abuja.
Born on June 12, 1958 in Dukul village of Kwami Local Government Area of the state, Umar obtained a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria in 1981.
He started work as a Graduate Assistant at the ABU in 1982, had a Ph.D from University of Salford, England, on Nuclear and Radiochemistry in 1987.
