The Gombe State University (GSU)’s College of Medical Sciences has inducted 23 new medical doctors into the medical profession, to bridge the manpower gap and boost the healthcare system in the state.
The graduates were inducted into the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) at the 4th attestation/oath-taking ceremony held weekend at the Clinical Auditorium of the GSU Medical College in Gombe.
Speaking at the ceremony, the provost of the college, Professor Mohammed Manga, said the college has so far graduated a total of 129 medical doctors in the last four years.
“We are still hoping and pushing that we get an increment in our admission quota from the MDCN for optimal utilisation of our resources for the benefit of humanity,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Aliyu Usman El-Nafaty, assured that the university would continue to provide the needed platform to encourage learning and teaching in the state.
He also urged the state government to consider an upward review of the university’s subvention to address growing financial challenges bedevilling the institution.
The state governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, assured that the state government would continue to invest in the education sector of the state.
Represented by the state’s Commissioner of Higher Education, Mohammed Shetima Gadam, the governor called on the MDCN to consider increasing the admission quota of the state university to at least 150.
He congratulated the graduates and urged them to prioritise professionalism and other ethics of the medical profession.
Daily Trust reports that the induction ceremony features the first Annual Professor Emeritus Idris Mohammed Lecture Series.
Provost of the college explained that the annual lecture series was initiated and named after the university’s first Professor Emeritus, Idris Mohammed, to provide a platform that will sustain his teachings and legacies.
