The Gongola Peoples Forum (GPF) has urged Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, to grant a pardon to Sunday Jackson, a farmer sentenced to death for killing a herdsman in self-defense.

Jackson was attacked while working on his farm, and in the ensuing struggle, he wrested the knife from his assailant and inflicted fatal injuries.

The GPF emphasized that Jackson’s case is a classic example of self-defense, highlighting the extenuating circumstances that led to the fatal altercation.

They pointed out that Jackson was unarmed, and his attacker was the aggressor, attacking him with a dangerous weapon.

The organization noted that Jackson has been incarcerated for 10 years, during which his family life has been ruined.

He has a 10-year-old daughter he has never met, and his wife has remarried.

The GPF argued that the Supreme Court’s decision, which was a split verdict, did not take into account the circumstances of the case.

The GPF appealed to Governor Fintiri to exercise his prerogative of mercy, as provided for in Section 212 of the Nigerian Constitution, to pardon Jackson and save him from the death sentence.
