Lack of access to quality drinking water is one of the causes of the rising cancer cases in the country, Director, Center for Water and Environmental Development, Musa Nimrod has said.
About 650 million people in the world cannot access safe drinking water and adequate sanitation services, which is vital to human health thereby putting them at risk of infectious diseases and premature death.
He said most Nigerians do not consider their source of drinking water so long as it is flowing , and  urged government to provide  portable drinking water for the  populace to reduce disease outbreak in the country.
“It is very important to sensitize industries that pollute water during production process, on the need to protect the water with a view to providing quality water for the populace,” he said.
 Also speaking, Dr. Donatus Adie said most Nigerian’s who claim to have boreholes actually have wells. He said  some challenges affecting fresh water include water pollution, as a result of industries, fresh water sedimentation, as a result of farming at the edge of the river bank, and siltation of river channels.
 While calling on government to make people pay for water to make it attractive, he noted that when there is good water, diseases will reduce and jobs will be created.
