Google honours Ladi Kwali, Nigerian Potter on N20 note

As it is the tradition with the tech giant, Google, to honour achievers in their field, today, the Nigerian famous potter, Ladi Kwali, was celebrated with a doddle.

Google’s doodle honours the exhibition of Kwali’s work at the Skoto Gallery in New York, on March 16, 2017. In a blog post, Google describes Kwali who features on the N20 note as one of the finest artisans from the country.

“Today’s Doodle celebrates the life of Nigerian educator, ceramicist, glassworker, and potter Ladi Kwali, who helped introduce the international community to the beauty of Nigerian art through intricately decorated earthenware designs,” Google wrote in a blog post.

“Here’s to you, Ladi Kwali! Thanks for putting your unique spin on a traditional craft and sculpting a place for future generations of women artisans,” it added.

Via an illustration in honour of Kwali, the tech giants made an animation showing her doing pottery in the presence of onlookers. 

Kwali was an educator, glassworker, potter, and ceramicist who brought the beauty of Nigerian Art to the limelight through her well-decorated earthenware designs.

Born into a family of potters in Kwali Abuja around 1925, her aunt taught her the methods of pottery in her early stage, however, she later invented her style.

She later received a doctorate degree from Ahmadu Bello University in 1977 and the Nigerian National Order of Merit Award in 1980.
