Tuesday March 6th would have been the 91st birthday of Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who was a writer and a journalist. Marquez, who died in 2014, is famous for his novels like A Hundred Years of Solitude and  Love in the Time of Cholera among others.

Google celebrated the day with a doodle dedicated to the Colombian novelist and journalist. The doodle has a South American appeal to it, rich in foliage and colour in what may be reminiscent of the fictional city of Macondo, where Marquez’s most famous novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude is set.

Amidst the vibrant flora and fauna, are a man and a woman in typical Latin American attires. They can be seen holding hands.

The doodle also features other items associated with Marquez and the wonderful world he had created. There is a train sliding through the forest, a nod to the train station that featured in his works, there is a side profile of Marquez’s head with his prominent moustache and to crown it all, Google added an animated yellow butterfly, which has become synonymous with the 1982 Nobel Prize Winner. The golden fish, from the author’s childhood, which also features in his books, makes an appearance on the doodle.

Marquez, fondly known as Gabo, was born in Aracataca, Colombia and authored 25 books in his life. He is credited with making magical realism a global phenomenom in literature and has inspired some of the most popular living writers in the world today.
