The Minister of State for Works, Muhammad Bello Goronyo, has restated the federal government’s commitment to supporting victims of the recent boat mishap in Kojiyo, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

At least 25 people have been confirmed dead, while several others remain missing after a boat carrying about 50 passengers to a local market capsized in the Goronyo River.

During a courtesy visit to the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Hajiya Zubaida Umar, Goronyo commended the agency for its swift intervention in providing relief to survivors and bereaved families. 

He also reaffirmed his earlier pledge of a N2 million donation to the victims’ families and announced plans to provide a speedboat to enhance safer water transportation in the community.

“The tragedy is a wake-up call for us to do more in ensuring the safety of our people. Through collaboration, we can strengthen community resilience and safeguard lives,” Goronyo said.

In her response, the NEMA boss thanked the minister for his solidarity and assured that the agency would sustain relief efforts. She also reiterated NEMA’s readiness to partner with the Ministry of Works and other stakeholders to boost emergency preparedness and disaster response nationwide.

Both parties pledged to work with the Sokoto State Government and relevant agencies to improve disaster management systems and strengthen long-term community safety.
